If you’re looking for where to shop for winter clothes for tall women — items like winter coats, snow pants, sweaters, and other cold-weather clothing — I’ve written this guide especially for you.
I’ve rounded up 17 retailers that cater to tall women and some shopping tricks to help you stay warm this winter.
I’m 5’10”, and I prefer shopping in tall sizes whenever I can. Especially in winter, I want to make sure my sleeves are long enough and my pants don’t leave my ankles exposed!
Finding the right fit includes choosing the correct proportion and cut of clothing. It’s not just a longer inseam. Tall sizes can feature longer lengths, longer sleeves, adjusted armhole placement, and adjusted tailoring details to fit our bodies.
If you’re a woman taller than 5’8” (172cm or so), give brands for tall women a try. Or, if you’re not that tall but need longer sleeves or longer pants, try tall sizes to see if they suit your body type.

How to choose winter coats and snow pants for tall women
Tall folks need a properly fitting coat — it’s vital for staying warm! We can’t size up in regular sizes to get longer sleeves, because then the coat might be too big everywhere else.
That’s an invitation for cold air to blow in. RSVP: no, thanks.
Look for a coat or parka that’s
- comfortable in the shoulders
- long enough in the sleeves
- long enough in the body (cover that bum for extra warmth!)
- and fits closely to your torso
When you try the coat on for size, wear your typical base, mid and top layers underneath so you can see how the coat will fit on a standard winter day.
→ See my guide for how to layer clothes to stay warm outside.
Snow or ski pants should have a longer inseam, of course. A true tall snow pant will also have adjusted pockets and knee placement so you can move comfortably. If this fit is key to your body type, make sure you’re shopping for “tall” and not just “long.”
Where to buy winter coats and snow pants for tall women
REI carries winter coats and snow pants for tall women.
Check Eddie Bauer for winter coats, parkas, and snow pants in tall sizes. They also carry sweaters, thermals, and tees in this size type.
Browse their Eddie Bauer (Re)Sale section for deals on second-hand items. As of this article’s publication, I wasn’t able to sort their resale items by tall or regular sizes.
American Tall offers outerwear for tall women. Also, check out their sweaters and sweatshirts (and any other kind of clothing a tall human might want).
Lands’ End has outerwear and other clothing for tall women. I have these 34” inseam snow pants, and they’ve kept me warm and dry.
The North Face doesn’t explicitly carry tall sizes that I could find, but it does offer long inseams for some items. These Freedom Insulated snow pants come in “long,” which is a 34” inseam. The size range is XS through 3XL.
Obermeyer has a crowd-favorite ski pant in long lengths. When I look at the size guide, the inseam doesn’t seem long enough — but I suppose if someone is skiing, they want their pants to cover their boots but not be too long. I guess? I’m no skier. Put me in an inner tube and send me down the mountain on my tush, kthx.
These bibs from Trew Gear come in 35” inseam, which is the longest I could find for women-specific snow pants or bibs. They’re pricey!
Where to shop for workwear and dressy coats for tall women
Chadwick’s carries blazers, coats, sweaters, pants, and more for tall women. They define their tall sizes as for women 5’7” and over. Chadwick’s styles tend toward workwear and polished casual types of looks. I have a tall jean jacket from there (no longer available online) and have worn it for years.
J.Crew has blazers and dressier coats, and a few heavier-duty coat options.
Simply Tall specializes in clothing for tall women. I’ve linked to their jacket collection, which seems best for workwear or casual, not freezing, situations.
More retailers that carry women’s tall sizes
Staying warm in the winter is more than choosing a great winter coat. We need warm shirts, sweaters, and pants to round out the wardrobe. Here are some more women’s clothing stores with tall sizes.
- Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta — these brands offer affordable tall women’s clothing
- Lands’ End carries snow pants, coats, and more in tall sizes
- JCPenney has lightweight jackets, sweaters, jeans, and activewear for tall women
- Long Tall Sally — this UK retailer of tall women’s clothing online now ships worldwide
- Asos
Try shopping in the men’s department
Tall women might want to try this shopping trick I’ve learned: Shop in the menswear or unisex departments. I’m shaped like a narrow rectangle, and I’m not curvy anywhere, so I can get away with this.
I find sweatshirts and sweaters that are marketed to men tend to be thicker and warmer than some items I find in the women’s section.
What’s up with that? Everyone should be warm!
Winter footwear in extended sizes
I often buy winter socks marketed to men. The size suits me better, and I’ve found that in many cases, they’re thicker and warmer than the female version of the same product. It’s maddening, but you may find it works for you, too.
Tall people often have bigger feet. Shocker! Here’s where you can find larger shoes.
- Long Tall Sally has knee-high boots that are actually for long legs
- Zappos has an extended size range
- My Columbia Ice Maiden II boots go up to size 12
Shop around, consult size and fit charts, and understand the exchange policy
It may take some trial and returns to find the right winter wear for you.
Read the retailer’s fit information and consult their size chart. Make sure the retailer’s return policy works for you.
Sometimes, we’re too tall to shop at the mall, so most of our clothing purchases are made online. It’s worth it to find clothing made just for us.
Stay warm out there.
